Panchakarma are five Ayurvedic detoxification procedures that help in dosha removal from the body. These are not only performed to treat ailments them, but also to maintain overall health.
In Panchakarma each process is broken down into three stages: Pre-procedure (Purva Karma), Main procedure (Pradhana Karma), Post procedure (Paschat Karma).
The five shodhanas or cleansing methods administered under Panchakarma are:
1. Vamana: This is the technique of eliminating doshas through emesis. This is especially beneficial for kapha and pitta-related disorders. This treatment is considered most effective in treating ailments such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, skin diseases, allergies, herpes, diabetes, sinusitis, and hyper acidity. The optimal time to perform this treatment is 'Spring' or perhaps 'Autumn.'
2.Virechana: To eradicate the doshas, loose motions are induced throughout this method. This is deemed quite beneficial in disorders caused by pitta dosha, such as hyper acidity, herpes, gulma (kind of tumor), jaundice, anemia, skin diseases, and so on. Autumn is the greatest time for this procedure.
3. Basti: The treatment is said to be mostly beneficial for the Vata dosha, although it may also be employed for the Kapha and pitta doshas, and a variety of ailments. This method includes an enema with herbal decoction, oil, honey, and salt. It operates instantly because it has a direct influence over the big intestine which is the main site of Vata dosha. The technique is considered very beneficial for disorders like back pain, arthritis, dystrophies, multiple sclerosis, muscle atrophy, etc. Monsoon season is ideal for this treatment.
4. Nasya: Medication is instilled into the nostrils during this procedure. It could be a medicinal oil or ghee, juice, or even powder. Because the nose is the entryway to the head, this operation may be beneficial in ailments involving the head and neck, such as sinusitis, migraine, hair loss, greying hair, headaches, epilepsy, etc.
5. Raktamokshana: Rakta (Blood) vitiated by the doshas is frequently the source of ailments such as skin disorders, abscesses, stomatitis, hypertension, herpes, varicose veins, arthritis, and so on. The method here is to allow blood and doshas to flow out of the body. 'Autumn' is the greatest season for bloodletting.
